General citation and court information

Everyone has a court date listed on their citation, but you may be eligible for an automatic reduction in charge and points without going to court. If your citation states that you have a fine and does NOT state ‘court required’, then you can pay any time before your court date and receive the reduction mentioned above. If you cannot afford to pay the fine before the court date, you must appear in court to arrange a payment plan.

If you received a citation for Uninsured Motorist, and you had insurance AT THE TIME YOU WERE STOPPED (not five minutes, an hour or a day later), you can present your proof of insurance to the Court Clerk and the charge will be dismissed. Be aware that if your insurance card shows your insurance began on the date you were pulled over, the Court Clerk will call your insurance agent to find out what time you purchased insurance on that day.

Please call the Court Clerk with any questions you may have before your court date. The phone will be forwarded to an answering machine during court, and you will be considered Failure to Appear if you have not made arrangements ahead of time.

Still effective as of April 20, 2021

We have changed our court procedure to ensure social distancing guidelines are met. When you arrive, check-in will be in front of the Town Hall. You will receive a restaurant pager. If it is your first time at court for the charge, you will receive an Advisement of Rights. It is expected that you will read the document before signing. Return the signed document to the person who gave it to you. The prosecuting attorney has already viewed your case, and if applicable, he will have made a plea offer that the Judge will see and discuss with you when you are before him.  You can wait in your car or at the Community Center on the other side of 27th Street Rd. When your pager lights up, you will enter through the west door. You will go before the Judge and discuss your case.

If you have been issued a citation with a specified fine, you have two options:

  1. Pay the fine
    • at the Town Hall – no fees for credit/debit card use
    • by mail – check or money order – no fees assessed
    • online – – $2.50 flat fee assessed by processing company
    • by phone: 877-819-7084 – $2.50 fee assessed by processing company
    • call the Town Hall – 970-351-0041 – $5.00 convenience fee added
  2. Appear in court on the date shown on your citation.

Note: There is a charge to use a debit or credit card if you pay online or by phone.

If you choose to pay the fine before court, please bring your copy of the citation with you. If mailing in your fine, please include your citation number and email address for your receipt on a note with the check or money order.

If your citation states ‘Court Required’, you must appear in court on the date written on your ticket.

It is possible to set up a payment plan if you are unable to pay the entire fine before the court date listed on the citation. If you have made arrangements with the Judge for a payment plan, it is critical that you pay the installment on or before the court date for that month. If you cannot make a payment, you are required to appear in court.

Where do I make a payment or appear for court?
You will come to Garden City Town Hall to make payments and for court. You can also mail a payment (see the FAQs below for more information).

Click here to go to the Town Hall

What forms of payment are accepted?
Cash, check, money order, certified check or credit/debit card.

Do I have to pay in person?
No. You can pay online (link is on the home page) with a credit/debit card or mail a payment. Please do not mail cash. If you use a money order, keep the receipt for tracking purposes. If you mail a payment and want a receipt, include your email address.

I’m on a payment plan. When do I need to pay my next installment?
Payments must be made monthly by the 5th of the month. If you do not pay by the court date that month, you will be issued a Failure to Appear notice, and $25 will be added to your balance. See the schedule above for court dates through 2021. We recognize that people are still struggling financially because of COVID. If you cannot make a payment on time, you must call the Court Clerk BEFORE your payment is due to discuss arrangements.

What happens if I don’t pay the fine or show up in court?
The first time this happens, you will be charged a fee for Failure to Appear, plus you will be required to appear at the next court date. If you don’t show up after that, either a bench warrant (for non-traffic cases) or an Outstanding Judgement Warrant (for traffic cases – this means your license is suspended) will be issued. While you may be able to get away with not appearing or paying, eventually you will be arrested or your driver’s license will be suspended, and you will not be able to renew your license or get a license in another state without paying the accumulated fines and fees.

Does Garden City make a lot of money from traffic fines and code enforcement citations?
Law enforcement issues citations to encourage safe driving. Code enforcement ensures that Garden City is a safe and clean place to live and do business. The cost of law and code enforcement far outweighs any revenue generated from citations.

Where do I show up for court or mail a payment?
Same place for both:
Garden City Town Hall
621 27th Street Rd.
Garden City, CO 80631
